This honestly was hard to get through! I think I’ve just discovered about myself that I don’t love cozy fantasy. I need higher stakes. The audiobook narration was so fun and reminded me of listening to Harry Potter! The story was beautifully written.
The best way I can find to describe this book would be charming.
It felt like I was reading a fairytale but not quite.
I could definitely see the Princess Bride inspiration, but I actually feel that it scratched my Narnia itch that is very seldom satisfied. It reminded me so much of the Silver Chair.
As per usual, Sanderson’s worldbuilding is top notch. The idea of oceans with spores that react dangerously to water is so utterly brilliant that I wish I’d come up with it!
The characters were all quite three dimensional & oh so endearing.
But I think my favorite parts were the twists thrown into such a simple plot. I won’t spoil them here, but they honestly made the book for me.
Was it as incredible as a Stormlight or Mistborn book? No. But it was exactly what it needed to be in the best way.
