This book should have been such an easy 5-star read for me — funny, fast, and about kaijus on another planet.
Instead, it’s 2/3 progressive politics — for some reason?! — and 1/3 poorly written monster lore. It takes until the final ~50 pages of the book to get to a legitimate plot, and I couldn’t tell you anything about what the kaijus look like except “big” and “with parasites”
Genuinely, I wanted to DNF this book in the first chapter based solely on the wildly unnecessary political commentary (and everyone loves to think about COVID, right?!). I only kept going because a) it was so short and b) I was convinced he couldn’t CONTINUE with that commentary and c) I wanted to write a legitimate review.
I understand if you’re not into conservative politics. But if that’s what you want to talk about, just be honest about it and WRITE ABOUT THAT; don’t create a thinly veiled YouTube rant disguised as a monster “pop song.”
