3⭐️ because I am conflicted on how I feel about this one? I loved the premise. It was giving Monster House meets Saw meets Clue and I was here for that. I did have some moments of skepticism because there are some ghostly moments & I typically avoid the supernatural like that in books. But they were so rare, I felt okay continuing. The book was actually surprisingly lacking in horror given the title. I can think of maybe two moments it felt a little creepy. Trying to unravel the mystery here was the most fun aspect, but I think I wanted MORE. I wanted more of the riddles and escaping the rooms. But that got way overshadowed by character stories (that started feeling pretty predictable and repetitive by the end.) My biggest issue with this, and this is going to be a spoiler*** So don’t keep reading if you don’t want anything spoiled. Buck. Did. Not. Deserve. That. How did Melanie go the entire book seeing Mortimer as a villain (which…I still think he was. he did his fair share) and then completely switch up at the end to seeing all of them as monsters instead? They did some wrong things, but deserving of death?! Buck absolutely did not deserve her turning on him. Over blackmail?? I just hated that lol. But then again, if she had let him live…I guess she wouldn’t have been able to step into Mortimer’s life and write the stories. Idk idk Thank you to poisoned pen press for sending me an early physical copy!
