This was my favorite standalone book for many years! It was the first adult novel that got me interested in reading more than just what I was assigned for school. The dark, brooding nature of the antagonist contrasts really beautifully against the hopeful innocence of the protagonist and his family. It's one book I'd love to own a signed copy of one day because of its significance in my life!
