My absolute favorite kind of book is a slow building fantasy epic. That being said, this one could probably trim off 300 pages.
I feel so attached to these characters, especially Kvothe, but there were a few sections—one in particular—that was a real slog.
That the only thing that keeps this from being a five star book for me.
The magic system is wonderfully intricate. The world building is top notch. The prose is some of the best in the history of literature.
The best part about a slow build is that the resolution will typically knock your socks off. This book & its predecessor didn’t do that. I’m assuming the reason is that the third book will satisfy that need for me. Since it’s all one big story, I have no issue with that at all. I look forward to hopefully experiencing that climax one day!
However, if The Doors of Stone never gets released, I’m satisfied with the enjoyment I’ve gotten from Rothfuss’ world. It feels like I’m getting to experience a modern fairy tale & that makes the journey that much more enjoyable.
