I was stuck between four or five stars. I’m going with five for one major reason: the side characters were so good. I actually liked every single character. I’m not sure if I’ve ever been able to say that.
Weeks didn’t waste any time in showing what kind of book this would be. Dark, gruesome, merciless, exhilarating. Within just the first few chapters, he wrote some of the most horrific acts I’ve ever read in any book.
There were at least three plot twists that made my jaw drop. Literally.
The prose wasn’t beautiful & poetic except when it needed to be, which is my personal preference.
I’m more of an epic guy, so this pacing felt so quick until we got to the climax, then it slowed way down. It wasn’t too jarring for me, but I could see how this would throw some people off.
Overall, this book may slip into my all time list. I need to chew on it a little longer. In the meantime, I guess I’ll just read the sequel.
