Wow. It’s been so long since I read a book that I didn’t want to put down. It was so refreshing. The worldbuilding. The magic system. But most of all, the characters. Sanderson was writing with a paintbrush here. These characters completely came to life. He took character tropes & put twists on them that made it seem so fresh. The hardened master? The street urchin turned protagonist? The aristocratic love interest? The evil warlord? None of them quite fit into their molds. Maybe this is weird for a guy, but as much as I loved the action, the allowance, the political intrigue, I have to say my favorite part by far was the romance! It actually had me on the edge of my seat. I truly believe the scenes at the ball were the most cleverly written sections & I was always itching to get to the next one. I understood why every character did what they did, whether I agreed with the action or not. They made me laugh, they broke my heart, they frustrated me, all in the best ways. I’m so happy to have been this attached to a group of characters & I’ll be picking up the next book first thing tomorrow morning (since I need to go to sleep right now)!
