I’m really torn between 4 & 5 stars for this one.
I’ve never had my enjoyment jump quite this drastically between the first & second installment of a series.
While I struggled to get through The Crystal Shard, I had to convince myself to put Streams of Silver down. I had a few very late nights with this one in my hands.
I wouldn’t say the quality changed all that much. It is still very clearly a 1980s fantasy novel.
I took a sizable gap between the two books, so I can’t dissect my contrast between my levels of enjoyment too much, but there were a few aspects that jumped out to me.
1. Adding Catti-Brie’s POV to the villain chapters helped make those less of a slog. I cared so little about Akar Kessell in The Crystal Shard that devoting entire chapters to him almost ruined the book alone. And while Artemis Entreri is more interesting, Catti-Brie still helped that pacing issue for me.
2. The party stayed together. Seeing the dynamics of the main four characters really drove him the personalities & arcs at work. I wasn’t in love with any characters before this book. Now I can say that I love all of our mainstays. You could truly feel the found family element this time around.
3. I’ve never seen a movie contain the word, copse, this much.
It was a roller coaster from beginning to end. It truly felt like a DnD campaign. Why more could I ask for from Salvatore? It was a blast!
