This book had some nostalgia for me. I first discovered Comer by seeing him speak at Catalyst Leadership Conference in Atlanta in 2018, where he spoke on this very subject in what felt like the infancy of what would become Practicing the Way, both the book & the organization. Since then, he has become one of the most influential secondary voices in my life. Would this book be considered his masterpiece? No. The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry & God Has a Name both still exist. Comer has a writing style that I’ve always really appreciated. He has an ability to take really complex topics & content, then package them in a really accessible way. He has an extraordinary gift of teaching/preaching that is a breath of fresh air. An incredibly intelligent man that feels no need to prove that fact to anyway. It’s hard to find both of those qualities in the modern western church. So given the sermons & podcasts I’ve already consumed from Comer, I didn’t find much new information in the book, but the organization of it all into one place did feel fresh. Comer has a way of bringing quotes from other ministers that are always just poignant enough to really drive his points home. The practical steps reinvigorated my heart for a disciplined life & to learn to live the lifestyle of Jesus. I’ll chew on this one for the next few weeks & try to take account of my soul. This book was a nice little pallet cleanse after four straight Tolkien novels. I’m thankful for this book.
