Why shouldn’t I have read this first again?
I must say, I absolutely adored this book.
It was really three stories, overlapping slightly here & there, that come together at the end. Two of these stories (Raoden & Sarene), had me riveted. The third (Hrathen) was a bit of a chore to get through in the best way possible; I hated a character I was meant to hate.
Without giving away any spoilers, I’ll just say that the characterization & worldbuilding, while not as polished as his later books, we’re textbook Sanderson & I found myself feeling like I was really a citizen of this world & a friend of these characters. The ending felt like a machine gun with all the twists in the last few chapters. I count at least five in hindsight. The mystery that kept my attention for 550 pages paid off for me in every way.
And there were still enough unanswered questions to have me stoked for this sequel that’s apparently being written!
If you’re a big Sanderson fan or just a lover of fantasy in general, I suggest giving this one a try!
