Im rereading the whole series leading up to finally reading the final volume, so this is my first time rereading this since it was first released. The difference in perspective as a 28 year old compared to a 20 year old is vast.
Some of the memorable lines from Marcus & co have become a little more cheesy, but not necessarily in a bad way. It feels authentic for a teenager. While it may not be relatable to my current self, I still feel myself remembering those times.
This is one of my favorite ensemble stories of all time. And since some of this main cast isn’t around anymore, it was so nice to visit them again. With this being my first read of volume one since the syfy show aired, I now read it in the actors’ voices & am able to compare scenes. It’s clear to me that the show was able to expand on some of the best parts of this comic. It didn’t necessarily do them better, just more completely. For instance, the friendship that blooms between Marcus & Willie was far more natural in the show. But 45 minutes is easier to work with than 22 pages.
