I read this book very slowly, a few chapters here & there with my quiet time in the mornings. I wanted to slowly digest it & dwell on it alongside scripture.
Given the time in which it was written, the translation required, & the subject matter at hand, it was a struggle for much of it.
But the parts that jumped out to me were incredible.
“Whatever lacked this name, no matter how learned and polished and veracious it was, could not wholly capture me.”
book 3, chapter 4 (Cicero’s Incluence)
I appreciate how much Confessions changed Latin literature. It is truly one of the most influential pieces of writing in not just the Church but the world. Anyone giving blatantly bad reviews simply cannot see beyond the surface. It wasn’t a fun read, but it was an important one that I’m glad to have completed.
